Dr. Berger’s Tubal Reversal Training
If you have read the article on Dr. Berger's education, internship and residency, then you probably want to know a bit about his training beyond that point. After all, you would like to have a doctor who was actually trained to perform tubal reversal surgeries. Dr. Berger is unlike most doctors in that he had actual training in the microsurgery tubal reversal procedure from an astonishing person. It was under the man who was actually doing the most research into the tubal ligation reversal microsurgical procedure at the time, Dr. Robert Winston. But let's go back just a bit.
After earning his Master's degree in Public Health, Dr. Berger was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. During that time, in 1976, he went to England and Belgium to study tubal microsurgery techniques from Dr. Winston. This was a very important move on Dr. Berger's part because microsurgery techniques are quite different from standard surgery.
First, Dr. Berger trained with Dr. Winston at the University of Leuven in Belgium in the animal laboratories for several weeks. Dr. Winston himself was doing research under the auspices of Dr. Ivo Brosens who had one of the best experimental programs dealing with the fallopian tube in the world. This was an important step for Dr. Berger to learn and understand the principles of the microsurgery techniques.
Next, he went to London, England to observe Dr. Winston actually perform these microsurgical tubal anastomosis procedures on patients at the Hammersmith Hospital. Remember, Dr. Winston was the pioneer in these microsurgical procedures, so Dr. Berger was getting excellent training. He was right at the forefront himself of a surgical breakthrough that provides a wonderful second chance to so many women.
Dr. Berger brought what he learned back with him and began the tubal microsurgery program at the UNC Medical Center. He continued to work in the laboratory perfecting his techniques for another six months. As there were no formal training programs in tubal microsurgery and no one with more experience then he at that time in the U.S., Dr. Berger's work in the laboratory was necessary to continue his development into the fine surgeon he is. Finally he began to operate on human patients. This makes him one of the first doctors to perform tubal reversal microsurgery in the U.S. Within just a couple years, Dr. Berger began to develop the procedures for adapting tubal anastomosis microsurgery to an outpatient setting which cuts down on the invasiveness of the operation and the time spent recovering.
Further, in the early 1980s, Dr. Berger achieved another coup to spend seven years learning from another surgical pioneer, Dr. Erle Peacock, a general and plastic surgeon. Dr. Berger feels that he matured as a surgeon during this last spell of training with such another accomplished surgeon. To quote Dr. Berger, "The experiences with Dr. Winston and Dr. Peacock gave me knowledge, skills, and experience that no other ob/gyn I know has ever had." I think that says it all. You simply will not find any other surgeon whose training can begin to compare to Dr. Berger's training. Aren't we all so very thankful that he is now training Dr. Monteith?
In addition to the above training, after coming back from England, Dr. Berger's credentials further show that he served first as an Adjunct Associate Professor for the Department of Maternal and Child Health at UNC till 2003 and then as a Clinical Associate Professor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, also till 2003.
